Transplanting Trees #887004

Asked October 03, 2024, 8:53 AM EDT

I have 2 honey locust and 1 spruce tree I’d like to transplant. When is the approximate deadline in the fall where transplanting is a no-no? The spruce is approximately 3” at base of trunk and HL are approximately 2.5”.

Dakota County Minnesota

Expert Response

Wait until spring to move the spruce.  It's too late in the season to do it now, and current drought conditions in the Twin Cities area compound the risk associated with the move.

The best time to move the honey locusts is in early spring before new growth begins. However, they are relatively transplant tolerant, so it's ok to move them now, but wait until the leaves drop. Water well until the ground freezes.
