Fertilizer for strawberries #887016

Asked October 03, 2024, 10:15 AM EDT

I have a strawberry patch that could use fertilizer and I'm not sure when to fertilize or what type to use for the best results. Any advice? Thanks.

If you haven't had the soil in that are tested in recent years, it would help to get a laboratory soil test result so you know if any key nutrients are notably low or if the acidity (pH) could use adjusting. (This can also test for heavy metals like lead, which won't necessarily be absorbed into the fruit in this case, but which could still be present on the surface of unwashed fruits in contaminated soil dust.) Labs often supply fertilizer recommendations (although geared for farmers, it can be adjusted to home garden scales) for particular crops.

While our Growing Strawberries web page doesn't specifically address fertilizer details aside from the points listed below, you can find some general fertilization recommendations on our Fruit Plant Care page.
  • for establishing transplants (ether brand-new plantings or after a bed renovation): fertilize plants lightly with a complete liquid or granular fertilizer (containing all three major nutrients, N-P-K)
  • for maintaining established plants: fertilize June-bearing plants after the harvest season, and day-neutral plants once a month, May through September
