Soil test #887051

Asked October 03, 2024, 12:55 PM EDT

Very poor tomato crop this year from our heirloom tomatoes originally grown by my grandfather. I want to check my soil and would like instructions on how to send a sample for fertility testing?

Expert Response

Our Soil Testing and Soil Testing Labs page provides information about how to take soil samples and which area labs you can consider using since UMD does not have its own soil testing facility. Learning the fertility and acidity (pH) of the soil can certainly help, but it probably wasn't a significant factor by itself in any crop failures from this past season, especially if you applied any type of fertilizer during the summer. Our Key to Common Problems of Tomatoes and Growing Tomatoes in a Home Garden web pages might be of some help in that case for troubleshooting what might have affected the plants.
