lemon Cyprus #887072

Asked October 03, 2024, 2:35 PM EDT

My newly planted lemon Cyprus has branches splaying at the bottom but standing straight at the top. Should I do anything or will that change as it grows? I have 3 other lemon Cypresses on my property that are beautiful and doing well.

Clackamas County Oregon

Thank you for your question, Gail.  We can’t identify the problem(s) without a clear photo or two, one up close and the other of the entire plant.  Thanks!

Thank you!  I believe what you're observing is a natural growth pattern, although I don't have the exact species to research which you have.  (Latin names are helpful!)   One look-alike species can spread out to 30-40 feet, so needs a firm base to hold all of that foliage.  https://hort.ifas.ufl.edu/trees/CUPMACA.pdf

Another similar species only grows 1-2 feet wide, and yours looks as though it's already nearing that width.  https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/hesperocyparis-macrocarpa-wilma-goldcrest

I don't think there's anything wrong with it, and you should keep doing whatever you have been.  Just recognize that this may become an enormous tree by the time it reaches its maturity.  Good luck!
