can I prune shrubs now - early Fall (October) #887094

Asked October 03, 2024, 4:52 PM EDT

I have the opportunity to have brush hauled away in a few days. I'd love to prune shrubs right now so the cuttings can be taken away now. It will be difficult to get rid of them in late winter/ early Spring.

What happens to the plants if I prune them now? Do they get messed up physiologically? Is it mainly convention that says prune in later winter or in spring/summer after blooming or is there a plant--health reason for recommending those times of year.

Thanks.

Expert Response

Pruning encourages new growth which may not have time to harden before the first frost and freezing temperatures hit. This makes plants susceptible to winter damage and wastes their energy reserves.

Also, it's best to avoid pruning during drought conditions which are now affecting most of the Twin Cities area.

It's okay to remove dead or dying branches.
