Overfeeding lawn #887106

Asked October 03, 2024, 7:00 PM EDT

Hello. I live in St louis Park MN. Our first ever sprinkler system was installed today. Our yard is established but not in the best shape currently, as we have decent bare patches in spots, and what grass we do have is fair but not great. Is it too late in the season to spread more seed given today is Oct 3rd? And if it's not too late, how often/long would you suggest we activate the sprinklers? Appreciate any input/suggestions. Thank you!

This would be a very good time to use that new system. Grass does a lot of growing in the cool season of fall with daytime temps between 55 and 75 degrees. A good soaking once a week is better than frequent light waterings. I suggest 1 inch of water once a week through October. Excellent!  thank you so much for the quick response!  with this being an established but thinning lawn, any suggestions on top soil needs, fertilizer, or seed?  most the area is heavy shaded

Allen, I don't have enough information to make a top soil or fertilizer recommendation. A soil test will give you direction as to if it is needed. Here is  a link with information on why and how to do a soil test.  https://extension.umn.edu/managing-soil-and-nutrients/soil-testing-lawns-and-gardens

The lawn calendar shows that you can apply fertilizer until Mid-October. You won't likely get soil test results before mid-October so applying some high nitrogen fertilizer (perhaps 27-0-3 or similar) would be fine. Be sure to water before and after applying.

Fescue lawn types are best for shady areas. Here is a link for more information for you to decide what best fits your needs and wants.  https://extension.umn.edu/lawn-care/buying-turfgrass-seed-minnesota-lawns

Hope this helps.
