Expert Response

Hi Lisa,

There is no permanent solution to your problem.  If the cracks are large enough, the closest is to clean the soil out of the cracks and seal the crack with cement or a driveway seam sealer.  Squirting water under pressure may help to wash soil out of the cracks.  Even this is probably not truly permanent.

There are many commercial herbicide products available, but
despite long-term effectiveness, they are not permanent.

There are many homemade concoctions suggested on the internet, but they are not permanent and many have adverse environmental effects on other vegetation and the chemicals leach through the soil.  They are not recommended.

Again, there are no permanent solutions.  When applying herbicides, label instructions for commercial products state the target vegetation, prohibited uses and proper application methods, but homemade formulations have no such labels and may be difficult to ascertain the dangers.
