What is digging up my lawn #887130

Asked October 04, 2024, 10:09 AM EDT

What is digging up my lawn? See photos. Back lawn is completely fenced to 6 feet. How do I stop this?

Expert Response

This looks like skunk or raccoon damage (it can be hard to tell apart). Either can dig into or lift up portions of sod to seek grubs or other invertebrates to eat in the soil, though that doesn't necessarily mean that grubs are so abundant that they need to be treated. (If they were, the lawn would probably not look this good.) It might be hard to discourage them, so repairing the divots is the best approach for now. You could see if the DNR has tips for repellent measures that might be reliable; trapping, if needed, may require a permit, and both animals bear a risk of carrying rabies, so minimizing direct interactions with them is safest.

Wildlife biologists at the MD Department of Natural Resources can be reached via email at <personal data hidden> (especially if you want to share photos) or, if you would like to speak to someone, they have a Wildlife and Heritage Service phone number at<personal data hidden>.
