This is my 8 yr old magnolia tree after this summer in Austin, Mn. We’ve had heavy rains this summer followed by drought.
I just noticed this problem this week.
Is this due to drought conditions?

The heavy rains this year could have stimulated the magnolia to grow too fast and cause it to have a thinner than ideal bark. However, the cause was probably sunscald that was made worse by the extreme weather this summer. Winter protection should help as will watering about an inch of water per week until the ground freezes.
