Douglas Fir Sawdust beneath Blueberries--How Often? #890117

Asked November 20, 2024, 10:29 PM EST

We followed your advice last year for controlling Mummy Berries on our 11 mature Blueberry bushes. We applied 3 inches of Douglas Fir Sawdust beneath them last winter. We had improvement with less Mummy Berries than the year before. There is still work to be done. Will this same application of sawdust continue working or do we need to add more Douglas Fir Sawdust this winter? Thank you.

Glad to hear it was helping in your situation. If you had more mummy berry since the saw dust was applied then you have new mummies on top. The same application will continue to work for the ones you buried but the new ones will not be affected. Not sure what resources you have to devote to the problem but, if possible, you could go through and remove (vacuum, pick sweep, etc..) any mummies you find on the surface. Maybe in the future one could put down the saw dust, then after bloom pull it all back so mummies fall to the ground, then pull back the saw dust...... Lots of work no matter what. Not sure repetitive layers of saw dust will be good in the long run as you would end up with quite a mound after several years.
