Chunky slime in the yard #890133

Asked November 21, 2024, 1:50 PM EST

Hello! Last night (11/20) we discovered a strange collection of clearish chunky slime directly adjacent to our home, in the front yard. I would very much like to know what this is, if possible! It has been raining pretty consistently for the last several days, daily temperatures in the 40s and 50s. The ground under the slime is dirt with mulch and some leaves on top.

Expert Response

Hi David,

Wow, that is so strange and fascinating!  My guess is that this is some kind of fungus or slime mold.

Unfortunately, we are unable to answer mushroom identification questions due to liability and the danger of being incorrect. We currently don't have any mycology experts in our system.

Alternatively, you could try the Oregon Mycological Society at https://www.wildmushrooms.org or at their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/OregonMycologicalSociety/ to see if they can identify this fungus.

Thanks for reaching out to OSU Extension.
