Apple tree for espalier training #890156

Asked November 21, 2024, 10:40 PM EST

I would like to plant a single apple tree in Hillsboro. I plan to train (espalier) for compactness. Is there a particular apple I should consider? I will just eat fresh apples when available. I am open to a tree that has been grafted with more than one type of apple.

Hi Greg and thanks for your question about which varieties of apple do well with espalier trellising. You will want a dwarf variety (a tree on a dwarfing root stock) so that it doesn't try to outgrow the trellis. After that, look for one that is low to moderate vigor, but the most important thing is to find an apple you like the taste of!

Portland Nursery has had an apple tasting event in the past (not this year for some reason) which is a great way to find which varieties you like. Many farmer's markets have samplings of the different varieties as well.
