Pine/Spruce Planting Time #890182

Hi there - I have a couple pine & a couple spruce trees I got. They are in burlap sacks & wire balls.
Is it too late to plant them? Would I be better off leaving them as is for the winter & planting in the spring? Or should I put them in the ground now?
When I do plant them do you have any instructions for doing so?
I currently have 2-3’ holes dug. First foot is black dirt, followed by black clay & then light brown clay.
Thank you for your help!

Expert Response
Hi Nathan,
Evergreens should be in the ground by October so you’re in a bit of a fix. I consulted another expert master gardener and this is her response:
“It isn’t ideal but it’s unlikely they will survive if they aren’t in the ground. At the very least they should be buried up to the top of a pot in a compost heap and covered with a couple of inches of mulch. They can be put in their permanent position in the spring if it isn’t possible now.”
Here’s the University of Minnesota’s guidance on planting balled and burlapped trees. Click on the appropriate links.

Water the trees regularly until the ground freezes. It would help to put a thick layer of wood mulch under the trees to protect the root zone from freezing and thawing, which can kill newly planted trees.
You may also want to wrap these evergreens in burlap to protect them from drying winter winds.
Good luck.
