Hydrangea tree #890205

Asked November 23, 2024, 10:37 AM EST

Hello! I have a gorgeous, large, limelight hydrangea tree. The problem is, it’s way too big for the space I planted it. It is crowding the sidewalk to my front door. Can I relocate the tree or should I just take it down? I’m not sure how a hydrangea tree could handle being transplanted. Thanks for your help!

The larger a shrub the harder it is to move, obviously. There is a technique, if you have time that is more successful than moving it without preparation. The technique is to severe the roots on one side by slicing into the soil in a semi circle along the edge of the circle you intend to dig up with a sharp spade and cut down as deeply as possible. Baby the shrub all summer, in the fall slice into the dirt all along the remaining half. Dig up the shrub the next spring. The shrub will have replaced the small feeder roots all along the cut edge giving the shrub a way to feed itself in the new location.
The only thing you have to lose is your time and effort and you have a good chance of keeping a mature shrub.  Be sure to move it to a sunny location.
