Tree identification help #890257

Asked November 25, 2024, 9:14 AM EST

Good morning! We have a few of these popping up all over the property and have thought then to be babies of the Chinese Elm, but the color on this is different to how the Chinese elm went this autumn. The bark is smooth with small raised "dots". Branches are growing alternating up the trunk, with the occasional 90 degree turn. Leaves are serrated ovoid shape. Any help in identifying this is greatly appreciated! Thank you, Jonathan

Expert Response

We agree that this look like one of the non-native Elm species, and fall foliage color isn't always diagnostic, as various factors can impact what colors leaves change any given autumn. You can use the Virginia Tech dendrology key to narrow-down possibilities if you'd like to try to confirm the ID of Chinese Elm.
