Am trying to find a way to fertilize my trees which are mature (30 years). Is it better to surface or deep root apply. I have a dog that goes outside so I try not to do surface applications.

thank you for using Ask Extension.
It really depends on the tree. Most trees really don't need a lot of supplemental fertilizer, but what you need to do is replenish organic matter on a regular basis. This could be wood chips as mulch or spreading compost along the drip line and slightly beyond since that is where the tree is absorbing the nutrients.
What your trees really do need is water as we are seeing more trees with drought/heat stress. That really isn't a problem right now in the Willamette Valley, but that could change over the summer.
Either method is fine.
